Meet Mrs Tamara Gasson

Mrs. Gasson grew up in northern Brisbane (go QLD!!) after her parents immigrated from England. As an only child, she spent much of her time participating in swimming competitions. She attended St Rita’s College in Brisbane and later St Columban’s College in Caboolture, where she served as a sporting house captain. During her senior years, she enjoyed studying PDHPE, Japanese, and Legal Studies, and pursued Japanese studies externally through Kumon.

Following high school, Mrs. Gasson was awarded an exchange scholarship from the Australian Institute of International Understanding (AIIU), which gave her the opportunity to study in Japan in 2005 at St. Mary’s in Gifu Prefecture. This experience helped her become fluent in Japanese and master the art of using chopsticks, while also deepening her appreciation for the culture and cuisine. Her favourite dishes include Tonkatsu, Ramen, and Sushi. Recently, she introduced her children to her love for Japan by taking them on their first trip there.

Returning to Australia, Mrs. Gasson pursued an Arts/Law degree, majoring in Japanese and minoring in Mandarin. She had a strong desire to work in translation and had ambitions of becoming a police officer. While waiting for her husband to complete his teaching degree, she earned a Cert III in Massage, a Cert III in Fitness, and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching as backup plans.

Her first teaching experience was at Peel High School in Tamworth, where she discovered her passion for teaching Japanese language and culture. Since then, she has organized overseas excursions to Japan, sharing her enthusiasm for Japanese culture with her students. Mrs. Gasson has lived in Tamworth since 2009, got married in 2015, and now has two sons. In her spare time, she enjoys taking her two Jack Russell dogs, Ellie and Dotti, on walks and swims with her family.

As the Careers Advisor at Farrer, Mrs. Gasson enjoys working with students to explore their post-school pathways and career options, often through various excursions. She is passionate about guiding students and helping them find the right direction for their future journeys beyond high school.
