This year Farrer sent three teams to compete in the annual Science and Engineering Challenge held at the TRECC on 20th & 21st March.

On the first day our Year 8 team competed in the Discovery Day against seven other schools and achieved second place to the winning Peel Team. Our boys thoroughly enjoyed the day out and the variety of challenges offered such as Bridge Building, Designing Earthquake Proof Towers and connecting towns to electricity in Electrocity.

Year 9 and year 10 competed on the Wednesday in the official Challenge Day. Winners of the Challenge Day get a chance to compete against the winners of other regions. Both of our teams faced similar challenges to the Discovery Day but with harder elements. Students had to design an accurate catapult and construct a hand from straws and string that could pick up materials. Year 9 managed to come third on the day which was a win over the year 10 team who were one behind in fourth place.

A big thank you to Rotary for sponsoring the competition and to Newcastle University. Their donations meant that teams only had to pay a quarter of the costs of the competition. Thanks also to the teachers who accompanied the students; Miss Clausen, Mr. Allen, Mrs Stirling and Mrs Lesslie.
