Ryan Woods, a Year 12 student, is a keen upcoming boxer who has just won the Australian Novice National Boxing Title held in Woy Woy in June. Ryan competes in the light middleweight division which has a maximum weight range of 71 kilos, and an age range of 17-19 years.

The National Title is a ‘knock out’ competition and Ryan was successful in each of his four matches, consisting of four x two minute rounds. He fought hard against competitors from Victoria and NSW to make it into the final where he was successful against a competitor from Maitland.

When I spoke with Ryan he said that boxing is a tradition in the Woods’ family with his Grandad, Father and Uncles all having boxed during their lives. Ryan says he really enjoys the challenge and excitement that boxing gives him, and was thrilled to win his recent title. He also said he has been boxing for about two years and during that time has built up a solid training program for himself based around his home gym, running and the PCYC gym.

Congratulations to Ryan on his success and good luck as he trains and fights his way to Melbourne in November.
